Common questions
What's free, and what does Curd Unlock add?
All six calculators are free permanently: yield, rennet, culture, calcium chloride, brine, and mozzarella citric acid. Curd Unlock ($6.99, one-time) adds the aging log — saved makes with their ready-by date, target temperature and humidity band, and flip/wax reminders — plus recipe scaling. There's a 24-hour free trial of the unlocked features.
Where do the numbers come from?
Every value is drawn from a named published source and cited in the app: the Van Slyke yield formula, Gianaclis Caldwell's Mastering Basic / Artisan Cheesemaking, Ricki Carroll's Home Cheese Making, the Cheese Science Toolkit, and New England Cheesemaking Supply. Curd shows published formulas and your own inputs; it does not certify any specific batch.
How does the yield calculator work?
Pick a style and enter your milk volume to get the cheese weight to expect, using the style's published yield band. If you've tested your milk, turn on "I tested my milk" to use the Van Slyke formula with your fat, casein, and target-moisture values.
Why does the brine calculator use both % and salometer degrees?
Cheesemakers measure brine either way. Curd converts between them live (100°SAL = 26.4% salt, fully saturated) and tells you the salt to dissolve for your water volume. The percentage is grams of salt per 100 g of water, clamped at saturation.
Why won't the calculator let me add calcium chloride to mozzarella?
Calcium chloride prevents mozzarella curd from stretching, so Curd flags it rather than giving a dose. This follows New England Cheesemaking Supply's guidance.
How do the aging reminders work?
When you log a make and turn on reminders, Curd schedules local notifications for that style's flip, turn, and wax steps. They're delivered on-device; the app uses no servers. You can turn them off per make at any time.
I bought Curd Unlock on another device. How do I restore?
Open More → Restore Purchase. Your unlock will be restored from the App Store account that originally purchased.
Does the app work offline?
Yes — Curd never makes general network requests. The exceptions are Apple's StoreKit (to fetch the unlock price and restore purchases) and the source links you tap (which open in Safari). All calculations and the aging log are local.
Is Curd a substitute for food-safety guidance?
No. Curd is an educational reference tool for home cheesemakers. It is not a substitute for your own judgment, a calibrated thermometer, or food-safety guidance from your local authority. When in doubt, throw it out.
How do I delete my data?
Delete the app from your iPhone or iPad. All local data (saved makes, notes) is removed along with it.
