How long will a 20 lb tank last?

Per AmeriGas, a 20 lb cylinder holds about 4.7 usable gallons — roughly 430,000 BTU at the EIA's ~92,000 BTU/gal. Divide by your appliance's rated BTU/hr: a 30,000 BTU/hr grill at full blast gets about 14 hours. Real burns run longer — the rated figure is the appliance's maximum, so Flame's answer is the floor, not a promise.

How does the Tank Scale work without a sensor?

Every cylinder has its empty (tare) weight stamped on the collar as TW — typically around 17 lb on a grill tank. Weigh the tank on any bathroom scale; propane on board is the reading minus TW. Flame turns that into pounds, gallons, BTU, percent full, and hours at your appliance.

Why does my tank only hold 4.7 gallons if it's called 20 lb?

Per NFPA 58, cylinders fill to a maximum of 80% of their water capacity so liquid propane has room to expand safely — OPD valves enforce this. The "20 lb" is the weight of propane at that 80% fill.

Is the rotten-egg smell enough to catch a leak?

No. Per NFPA, the odorant warns but is not guaranteed — it can fade, and noses miss it. Leak-check with soapy water after every reconnect (never a match), and if you smell gas: no flames or switches, leave, and call your supplier or 911 from outside.

Can I run my patio heater or generator in the garage?

No. Per US CPSC, fuel-burning equipment makes carbon monoxide — grills, patio heaters, and generators are outdoor equipment and must never run indoors, in a garage, or in any enclosed space.

Does it work offline?

Yes — Flame never makes general network requests. The exception is Apple's StoreKit (price fetch, restore). Everything else is local.

Is Flame a guarantee?

No. Flame is an educational reference that shows published figures alongside your inputs. Appliances cycle, regulators vary, and tanks age — plan margin, and follow your equipment's manual.
