What Loam does
Your soil test report states its recommendation in pounds of nitrogen, phosphate and potash per 1,000 square feet. The bag in your shed says 10-10-10. Loam converts one into the other for your bed, and tells you what the other two nutrients over- or under-deliver at that rate. Common questions
Where do I find the three numbers to enter? On the fertilizer recommendation line of your soil test report, usually printed as pounds of N, P2O5 and K2O per 1,000 square feet. If your report gives them per acre, switch the basis to “per acre” and Loam does the scaling.
Why does the app say my bag over-delivers phosphate? Because no single bag hits all three targets at once. If your report asks for no phosphate and your bag is a 10-10-10, it is carrying phosphate the soil cannot use, and surplus phosphate runs off into surface water. A bag with 0 in the middle suits that bed better.
Why won't it give me my lime as one number? More than 50 pounds per 1,000 square feet in a single pass is too much lime. Loam splits a large requirement into applications four to six months apart with a re-test between them, which is the standard extension safety guidance. Lime is slow and very easy to overshoot.
What is buffer pH, and why does Loam keep asking for it? It is a second, separate pH figure some labs report, and it measures how hard your soil resists a change in pH. It gives a far better lime number than soil pH alone. If your report has only one pH, use the Estimate path — Loam will label the result an estimate.
Why does compost need so much more than blood meal? Both carry nitrogen, but only about 15% of compost's nitrogen becomes available in the first season against roughly 90% for blood meal. Loam shows you both the total and the first-season figure, so they never look interchangeable.
Why do my two beds want opposite things? Target pH belongs to the crop, not the garden. Potatoes want 5.0–5.5 because liming invites scab; brassicas want 6.5–7.5 because clubroot is suppressed there. That is why the target band is set per bed.

Important
Loam is an educational reference and a personal log — not a substitute for your soil testing laboratory's own recommendation. It converts the recommendation you were already given; it does not generate one. Laboratory methods differ, and a Mehlich-3 phosphorus number does not mean the same thing as a Bray one. Where a figure is an estimate rather than a conversion, the app says so on the result.
