What salt level does your cell need?
A saltwater pool isn't chlorine-free. A salt chlorine generator (SWG) passes pool water — lightly salted — over electrically charged plates, splitting the salt (sodium chloride) into chlorine that sanitizes the pool, then recombining back to salt. For that process to run, the salt concentration has to sit in your cell's target window.
Target salt by brand
Most cells want roughly 3,000–3,200 ppm, but the exact ideal and tolerance differ. Always defer to your unit's manual; typical figures:
| Cell | Ideal ppm | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Hayward TurboCell | 3,200 | 2,700–3,400 |
| Pentair IntelliChlor | 3,400 | 3,000–4,500 |
| Jandy TruClear | 3,000 | 2,500–3,500 |
Why too low and too high both hurt
Salt is a Goldilocks number:
- Too low — the cell can't generate enough chlorine, output drops, and many units throw a low-salt warning and stop. The pool slips toward an algae bloom.
- Too high — excess salt accelerates corrosion of metal fittings, ladders, and heater components, and can damage the cell itself. You can't remove salt; you have to dilute with fresh water.
Chlorine generation recycles salt, so it doesn't get "used up." Salt drops when you dilute (rain overflow, splash-out, backwashing, fresh-fill) and rises only when you add more. Overshoot means a partial drain-and-refill — so add conservatively and re-test.
Raising and lowering
To raise salt, add pool-grade salt (sodium chloride, >99% pure, non-iodized) based on pool volume and the gap to target — roughly 50 lb raises 10,000 gal by about 600 ppm. Run the pump, brush to dissolve, and wait 24 hours before re-testing. To lower salt, there's no additive — replace a portion of the water with fresh.
Trust a real test, not just the cell's readout. A generator's built-in salt reading is an estimate that drifts as the cell ages and scales. Confirm with test strips or a meter before dumping in bags of salt.
Saline gives you the exact salt dose
Pick your cell brand and pool volume, enter your current salt reading, and Saline returns the precise pounds of salt to reach that cell's target — plus full water-balance dosing and a cell-longevity (CSI) readout. Free to download.
