What size log splitter do I need?

For most homeowners splitting seasoned rounds up to about 12 inches: the retail 16–22 ton class covers hardwood, and less does softwood. Bigger rounds, hardwood, knots, or green wood push you up a class. Split's Tonnage Guide gives the band for your exact wood — and tells you when a giant round is really a chainsaw job first.

Is a "25 ton" splitter really 25 tons?

Nobody can check: there is no published test standard behind splitter tonnage — no UL or ASABE rating protocol. Tonnage charts are seller guidance, and different charts disagree by 2× for the same log. That's why Split gives ranges anchored on measured wood properties, with the guidance attributed as guidance.

Why won't my splitter go through elm?

Per the USDA Forest Products Laboratory's species notes, elm (with sweetgum and sycamore) grows interlocked grain — the fibers weave, so it resists splitting far beyond its density. Split classes these woods hard regardless of their specific gravity. Sharp wedge, cool day, and patience — or save elm rounds for the biggest machine you can get.

Green or seasoned — which splits easier?

Seasoned, for most species — green wood grips the wedge and can take roughly half again the force. But splitting green is still the right order: per US EPA Burn Wise, split first, then season below 20% moisture. Split's guide has a green toggle so you size for the wood you'll actually face.

Why does Split insist on one operator?

Because that's what the injury pattern shows: most serious log-splitter injuries — crushed and amputated fingers, per US CPSC emergency-room surveillance — happen when a second person's hands are on the log as the ram moves. One person loads, positions, and cycles. A helper can stage rounds away from the machine.

Does it work offline?

Yes — Split never makes general network requests. The exception is Apple's StoreKit (price fetch, restore). Everything else is local.

Is Split a guarantee?

No. Split is an educational reference that shows published wood data and attributed retail guidance alongside your inputs. Knots, crotch wood, and machine condition all move the real answer — plan margin, and follow your machine's manual.
