Where do the numbers come from?

Every figure names its source in the app: species heat content from USU Forestry Extension's "Wood Heating" table (after the University of Nebraska's "Heating With Wood"), the <20% moisture target and never-burn list from US EPA Burn Wise, creosote and chimney-fire guidance from the CSIA, the 128-cubic-foot cord from NIST Handbook 130, and heating-fuel heat contents from the US EIA.

Why doesn't the seasoning tracker just say my wood is ready after a year?

Because the calendar doesn't dry wood — conditions do. Time-based "seasoning charts" are folklore: the same oak can be ready in 12 months in a windy open stack and still wet at 24 in a shaded pile. Stack shows elapsed time as a planning estimate against the EPA six-month floor, but marks a stack ready to burn only when your own moisture-meter reading on a freshly split face comes in under the EPA 20% target.

How do I take a moisture reading the right way?

Split a piece and read the meter on the freshly exposed inner face, at room temperature if you can. The weathered outside surface dries first and reads deceptively low — the inside number is the honest one.

What's a face cord, and why does the app convert it?

A full cord is 128 cubic feet of compactly stacked wood (4 × 4 × 8 ft) — the only lawful unit of sale for bulk firewood in states that adopt NIST Handbook 130. A "face cord" or "rick" is a 4 × 8 ft face one piece deep, so its real volume depends entirely on piece length: 16-inch pieces make it a third of a cord. Stack converts so you can compare prices on the full-cord basis.

Does it work offline?

Yes — Stack never makes general network requests. The exception is Apple's StoreKit (to fetch the unlock price and restore purchases). All calculations and your stacks are local.

Is Stack a guarantee?

No. Stack is an educational reference calculator that shows published guidance alongside your inputs. Wood, stoves, and chimneys vary — follow your stove manufacturer's manual, and have your chimney inspected annually by a certified sweep.
